How To Play Poker

The first step that should be taken before participating in any game of poker is to decide which type of poker to play and to know a little information about each of the games. For example games such at Texas Hold'em and Seven Card Stud all involve using one or more community cards to make up your best hand. Other games such as High-Low poker see the prize pot being split between the players that have the highest hand and the lowest. Other types of poker that you may find in a casino like Let It Ride (not actually poker) see the players’ best hand being made from the dealer’s cards as well as their own.

The main object of any of the poker games is to win what is known as the pot, this is made up by the number of players during a hand of poker, the amount of money that is in the pot depends on how many players are in the game and the ante of each bet. There are in poker essentially two ways in which to win the pot, the first is to have the highest ranking hand among the players or secondly to bluff the other players into believing that you have the better hand and therefore be able to convince the other players to folding. An essential part of playing poker is based on deception which is achieved by bluffing, for a bluff to work the other players must believe that you have the better hand. Many first time poker players are fascinated by the concept of bluffing but often fail to use it at the correct times. The value of the need to bluff depends upon the stage of the game. There are a wide number of assumptions to be made about the other players such as are they bluffing what state is their hand in etc, and it is this vagueness which makes it difficult to tell exactly when to bluff.

As in other types of casino games there are a number of strict rules which are to be regarded however in poker it is important to know the exact hierarchy of the cards and how they are ranked. It goes, the lower the probability of getting the hand, the higher the rank and therefore the stronger the hand which gives the player a higher chance of winning the pot. The game will start with the dealer, starting from their left, handing out the cards to each player, once the player has looked at their cards they are left to choose one of four options. These options are checking the bet, this is to bet nothing but still remain in the game (you can only check a bet if the other players haven't made a bet or it's your turn in the round). The player can call a bet (by betting the same amount of money as the previous bet), raise the previous bet or fold which means giving up the chance to win the pot by not matching the bet.

There are normally no more than three rounds of betting permitted in casino poker and as in all organised games there is a structure in casino poker, a example of this is if playing at a table which has a $2-$5 ante then the player can only bet in amounts of $2 until the player shows a pair or until the bet has gone round the table once or twice, (this will depend on the casino). It is in this stage of the game that the bets can be increased to $5, since all of the players are attempting to win the pot they are all in-effect playing against each other. The casinos make their money by charging around 10% of the pot for each hand of poker, the maximum that the house takes from the pot is around $3 although this will depend on the table you are at and the casino you are in.
